This guide is about tubular mesh, mesh sticks and stringers rather than a complete solid-bag setup. Mesh has open spaces in its weave, so water reaches the bait quickly and fine ingredients can escape unless a close weave is selected.
A typical system stores the mesh around a loading tube inside a dry protective container. Bait goes through the tube, a plunger compresses it and the filled mesh is slid off, tied and cut. The result may be a rounded parcel of whole baits or a longer compressed stick made from crumb and small particles.
Dissolve means the PVA structure loses its strength in water; it does not mean every product opens at the same instant or under every condition. A tight knot can remain longer than a single mesh strand. Cold water slows many formulations, while warm shallow water can start breaking them down before the parcel reaches the bottom. Product labels are starting points, not a substitute for testing.
What PVA mesh does well
The main advantage is precision at small scale. A mesh parcel can place a few pellets or crushed boilies next to the hookbait without a full baiting cast. That is useful when only a little feed is wanted, on a short session or after a bite when the angler wants to repeat an exact parcel.
Mesh can also hold the hook and hair in a controlled position during the cast. The point may be lightly nicked into a finished bag, or a stick may be threaded onto a suitable hooklink using the maker's method. Once the PVA has dissolved, the hook must separate cleanly and the bait must remain free.
It is not automatically better than loose baiting. A mesh parcel adds drag and weight, can reduce casting distance and may pull a delicate rig off balance. PVA mesh versus solid PVA bags
Mesh is a knitted tube with openings. Water penetrates readily, shapes are quick to vary and a small bag can be attached without placing the entire rig inside. Solid bags are closed film envelopes normally packed around the complete lead and rig. Their preparation, aerodynamics and lead arrangements are different.
Mesh suits sticks, small parcels and stringer-like clusters, especially with dry crumb, pellets or boilies. Solid bags can contain very fine dry mix and hold the complete terminal setup in one compact package. Neither is universally more reliable. The decision depends on rig, bait, range, depth and whether the lead system is approved for the attachment.
Do not combine instructions casually. A lead arrangement described as compatible with a solid bag may not behave the same way with a separate mesh parcel. Choosing mesh diameter
Narrow mesh makes slim sticks and small parcels. It offers less frontal area and can be easier to cast, but whole boilies or large pellets may not pass down the tube. Wider mesh accepts a broader bait mix and produces a larger pile, with more drag and a greater change to the loaded casting weight.

Fast-melt and slow-melt mesh
Some ranges provide fast- and slow-melt versions. Fox describes fast melt for winter or shallow water and slow melt for summer or deeper water. That is sensible product selection guidance, not a universal seasonal law. Water temperature at depth, descent time, compression and knots all matter.
A fast mesh may weaken during a high, slow cast into warm water or before a parcel reaches a deep bottom. A slow formulation may remain around the bait longer than expected in very cold shallow water. Test a sample tied and filled exactly as it will be fished. Time it until the bait is released and inspect whether any knot or folded material remains.

Baits that work in PVA mesh
Dry crushed boilie, boilie crumb, dry groundbait and appropriately sized pellets are straightforward starting points. Whole or chopped boilies work in a sufficiently open and wide mesh. Use only bait permitted by the fishery and keep the parcel proportionate to the feeding plan.
Fine ingredients need micromesh or they can spill before the cast. Very sharp pellet fragments can stress a stretched mesh, while a loose mix can leave a lumpy parcel that flies badly. Sieve or crush the bait consistently and compress it enough to hold its shape without forcing the weave apart.
Wet bait and PVA-compatible liquids
Water starts dissolving PVA. Damp groundbait, thawed bait, water-based liquid food and wet hands can weaken mesh before it leaves the bank. Prepare dry ingredients in a separate container and close the PVA tube before handling anything wet.
Some oils and purpose-made liquids are described by their manufacturers as PVA friendly, but a liquid's appearance is not proof. Emulsions and flavoured blends can contain water. Test the exact product and ratio on a spare piece of mesh, then wait at least as long as preparation and casting will take.
How to make a compact mesh bag
Begin with clean dry hands and a dry tube. Pull a short length of mesh from the former and tie the end using the system's recommended knot. Check for ladders or thin areas before adding bait. Hold the tube over a bait container so spills do not reach the ground.
Add a small amount of suitable bait through the funnel. Use the plunger to move it gently towards the tied end, then add more in stages if required. This produces a more even parcel than filling the whole tube and forcing it at once. Do not strike or over-compress the plunger.
Slide the filled mesh from the tube while retaining the pressure needed for a neat shape. Twist and tie above the bait, leaving enough mesh for a secure knot without a large wad. Cut with dry sharp scissors. Inspect both knots and squeeze lightly to confirm the parcel is firm, not split.
How to make a PVA stick
A stick is an elongated compressed parcel, usually made from fine crumb, groundbait and small pellets. Select a narrow or medium tube, create the first knot and load the dry mixture in small stages. Compress evenly so the finished cylinder has no hard lump at one end and loose bait at the other.
The length must match the intended attachment. If it will be threaded onto a hooklink, confirm that the material and rig can pass through without damage, use a suitable dry needle and protect the hook point. A very stiff boom or delicate coating may be harmed or forced into an unsuitable curve by a long dense stick.
A stick can be attached beside the rig rather than threaded, but use a recognised method compatible with the lead system. Using PVA stringers
PVA string carries several pierced boilies or other robust baits in a line. Korda's current string comes on a 15 m spool and the manufacturer recommends leaving gaps so water can reach the material. Closely packed baits and bulky knots can delay separation.
Use a clean baiting needle suitable for the bait and keep fingers behind its point. Make the stringer short enough to cast safely, secure it to the hook or rig by the product method and check that no bait can slide over the hook point. A stringer should separate into individual baits, not remain as a solid chain.
PVA string can also tie mesh necks, but adding several wraps creates a dense knot. Use only what is required and include that knot in the melt test. Avoid licking or wetting string; it is unhygienic and begins breakdown before the cast.
Attaching mesh to the hook
One common method is to nick the hook point lightly through the mesh near a knot, leaving the point able to pull free as the PVA dissolves. Do not bury the hook deep in a hard pellet or wind mesh around the bend repeatedly. The attachment must hold for the cast without masking the point afterwards.

If foam, tape or another PVA item is also used, test the combined bundle. Separate products may dissolve at different rates and their knots can catch. More PVA is not automatically more protection.
Attaching a stick to the hooklink
A fine baiting needle can pass lengthwise through a compressed stick, after which the hooklink is drawn through. This can straighten a supple braid and place crumb along it. Protect the knot, coating and hook point throughout the process.
Do not force a large eye or swivel through a narrow stick. It may tear the mesh or damage a connection. If the rig cannot pass smoothly, use another attachment method or a wider stick. Examine coated braid after threading because a needle can split its skin.

PVA mesh over silt and weed
A light mesh parcel can add a little feed without the large impact of a heavily packed solid bag, but the lead still enters first and can pull the hooklink into soft silt. Over low weed, a compact stick may shield the point and help the hooklink arrive together. It cannot make dense or tethering weed safe. If the rig cannot settle or a carp cannot be landed reliably, find a clearer spot rather than adding a larger parcel.
After retrieving, inspect the hook point and look for bait still caught in weed. A clean empty hook does not prove the mesh opened in the intended place; it may have broken on impact or during descent. Only a representative melt test and consistent casting reduce that uncertainty.
Lead-system compatibility
Attaching extra weight and drag can change how a lead clip, inline insert or helicopter arrangement behaves at impact. Use a mesh method explicitly compatible with the exact system and preserve every fish-safety release path. Do not loop PVA around a top bead, tail rubber or moving component merely because it holds neatly.

Test the rig dry for casting security and in water for release. Pull the hooklink after the mesh has gone and confirm that nothing has tightened around a swivel. If the lead ejects unexpectedly on impact or the safety mechanism is obstructed, stop and rebuild with the correct method.
Casting a PVA mesh parcel safely
Weigh or estimate the complete loaded combination, including lead and wet-prone bait, against the rod's suitable casting range. A large mesh bag creates a second mass that can swing independently. Make a smooth progressive cast rather than a violent hit, and keep the area clear of people, animals and overhead obstacles.

How much bait should go in the mesh?
Use the smallest parcel that serves a clear purpose. A thumb-sized stick may protect the hook and offer a taste of food; a larger bag creates a more obvious patch but changes casting and adds bait every time the rig is recast. Count repeated parcels as part of the total feeding plan.

If the rig is moved several times, record how many parcels entered each spot. PVA feels precise because each bag is small, yet ten small bags can become a substantial pile. Take unused mix home and do not tip it into the margin at the end.
Testing melt and release
Use water from the venue when permitted, or a clean container at a similar temperature. Tie the same knots, use the same mesh, fill and compression, and include any liquid. Lower it without disturbing the water and time until the bait is fully released rather than until the first strand becomes soft.
Inspect the remaining knot and move the released rig gently. The hook point, hair and lead-system parts should be free. Repeat after changing mesh, adding oil, using a larger bag or moving to much deeper water. One test made in summer is not evidence for a cold winter session.
Build a safety margin between the observed release time and the likely descent. If that margin is small, choose a slower formulation for warm deep water or a faster one for cold shallow water as appropriate, then test again. Do not guess from air temperature alone.
Keeping PVA dry and organised
Return mesh to its protective tube and close the lid immediately. Store refills in sealed bags or containers, separate from wet nets, bait towels and condensation. A bivvy can become damp overnight even when rain never touches the tackle.
Use one dry towel for hands and another for bait spills. Prepare parcels in advance only if they can be sealed away from moisture and the contents will remain suitable. Damp or softened pre-tied bags should be discarded into rubbish, not cast in hope.
Mark refills with diameter and melt type. Similar white meshes are hard to identify once packaging is removed. Retain maker instructions and do not mix a refill with an incompatible tube merely because it appears close in size.

Products intended for year-round or fast-melt use are designed to work in cold water, but breakdown is generally slower and knots matter. Test the exact filled parcel in representative water and require complete release before fishing it.
